What Writers Need To Find Importance In

What

Writers

Need

To

Find

Importance

In

This blog post will reveal some hard truths about what writers priorities in their journey can be if they put forth the effort.

You have a multitude of genres to choose from as well as topics. In fiction, all of what you put into words isn't real but unfortunately there are those that take it as real. A friend of mine called it comparing horses to unicorns. This is from personal and political feelings and can be understood if it were someone writing nonfiction. But this is fiction. To avoid the likely inevitable backlash do as much research as possible. A second piece of advice is to ignore everyone who objects to your published work. Its probably not a good idea to ignore too many people though. This is one part in finding importance. Its a matter of thinking you can please everyone. You never will please everyone. Let it go.

The biggest focus absent to some degree is telling a good story. A good story has moral lessons, humor, tragedy, love, violence and fun. It should show struggle and perseverance. It can show whatever you like to a certain degree. You may say, "Well that's in all the books I read and write."
If so, good. I don't get that impression anymore which makes me hesitant to buy new books these days. All anyone needs to do is relax and choose to inspire and entertain over converting someone to a cause. Basically, its important not to preach.

A third thing writers need to find importance in is that we are all colleagues and not enemies. This means reading other writers books and blogs. Cheering them on. Giving them hope when they are down. Its important to aid in their development as creatives and promote them when you can. We are taught from day one to be kind to one another. Why not keep that practice alive?

And finally. There is no time limit to getting publish. It might feel that way by the speed others are getting published with six figure deals and such, but you don't know how long they've been at it. Make it important to take your time and craft the best story possible.

Why Writers Should Write

Why

Writers

Should

Write

I feel as though there are several good reasons why writers should write. The reasons for my writing stem from wanting a career in a creative field. I want to write stories people will talk about for years to come because the story's world and characters took them away from reality. It isn't ever a bad thing to want a career in a field you want to pursue. Plus, like golf you can do it until your body and mind quit working.

Writers in my opinion develop a talent and are not born with one. If a writer is serious about their craft then it should be tied for first place next to whatever or whoever matters most. It makes no sense to want something so bad and not pursue it. I don't think though that banking on fame is a good idea. There are many writers who few know the face of unless they're a big fan. I tweeted recently about a African American writer named Dwayne McDuffie. I'm a big fan of his because he contributed to some of the best cartoons to ever exist. He passed away many years ago and I will always love what he did with Static Shock. But again not too many people know his face unfortunately. Fame is not out of the question but don't bank on it or write for it. Go for that writing career first, and then maybe as an added bonus fame will come.

You really need to have a burning in your heart to write. The fire within you can come at any age no matter what. I started writing at twenty five years old while many did so at age five. A part of what I'm getting at is if you want to do something with your life then don't let age be what stops you. And when you get started read a lot and write a lot until it flows like a river. This is part of a reason to write because its what you want to do with yourself.

There is a reason to add some words on why not to write as it pertains to fiction. If you are not going to do the research required to describe a person or place accurately then forget it. The worst you can do is base what you know of a culture off of a movie or TV show. Documentaries are the exception because they're nonfiction. The point is don't write unless you know what your talking about. (Even when your making it up.) You'll run into more trouble this way and it will make you regret being a writer that didn't do his/her/they or them homework.

In conclusion, writers should write because they love the process, want to do something with themselves and are serious about their passion. I left out by mistake that writing for fun is good too. In fact, if its not fun then you're only hurting you.
