Politics. Personal or otherwise. Its been included in all forms of entertainment to some degree or another. I'm here to discuss publishing. It seems as recent as 2016 when fiction dove head first into a writer's personal politics. Voices that were not heard before were, and are now, being uplifted. Thus an immersion into politics. I do want voices from all backgrounds to be heard. But why not just focus on telling a good story, one that is accessible to everyone. I go to the bookstore, open a book, and see the English language has changed. This is in certain books. It is to me expressing a certain kind of politics, one that isolates potential readers. And how exactly can you sell millions of copies if only a few people agree with and understand what your actually talking about?
I do understand the biggest reason behind the implementation of certain kinds of politics in writing. A bridge is being built in most cases to help the average reader understand a writers experiences. These experiences are often narrowed down to a specific kind of person. And often time this has a long negative history behind it. Why not express experiences more personal? Mental illness, loss of a loved one, or the struggle to pay bills. These are issues most us can connect with. Why not have the over arching plot be the historical struggle?
I'm working personally to read a wider array of books these days. Books that of which I typically avoid because I'm not a huge fan of anything set in the real world. It has made me want to write crime thrillers and horror. I deep down want to avoid any story that keeps me in our current world's problems though. I'm a slow learner when it comes to climbing from the the comfort zone.
In conclusion, I think writers should focus on creating a way for readers to escape from what the news shows them. An escape from social media's warring sides. Life is already hell. Why should we have to confront it in a potentially good book?
