Four Stars
This is the second book in a trilogy. The protagonist Lin is now an emperor. The stakes are higher in this book than the first. Lin has an uprising and a rebellion to tango with. Some folks in charge want her to abdicate her throne. And what's worse is there is a mystery to be solved. All of this makes the story enjoyable. Plus, we get to see characters from book one with their own struggles.
As for my issues with the book there are a few. I do find the bone shard magic interesting. It was in the first book. However, its not effective in a tough situation such as a battle. Just like many writers of television and books, Stewart gives Lin a lot of breathing room. When neck deep in a fight enemies aren't coming at you one or two at a time. This is what HBO did right with Game of Thrones. The Battle of the Bastards left Jon Snow with little to know time to breath.
I'm ranking this story at four stars because of the relationships. The relationships Lin has with each character, and the ones each character has with one another. They are warm and full of trust.
