Yellowface

By R.F Kuang

This story deserves Five Stars just for how ambitious it is. It gives you a look into the publishing world and what writers go through. The protagonist is what happens when a frustrated writer goes down a dark path. I was sympathetic to the protagonist toward the story's end. However, June (the protagonist) remained rotten from start to finish.

The protagonist was a terrible person before she stole her friend's manuscript. She found loopholes throughout the story you hoped she wouldn't. I'm glad that Kuang didn't make June's victim an angel. It's far more realistic that characters, just like in real life, all have skeletons in their closet. The way the story was written makes exploring its characters exiting.

Yellowface is written in first person, present tense. I don't often read books set up this way, preferring third person, past tense, limited. I find that the story comes alive the way it is written.
