A Review of The Hunger of the Gods

The Hunger of the Gods

John Gwynne

John Gwynne's second book in The Bloodsworn trilogy is interesting on a story level. It develops the characters from its predecessor while giving us new characters to enjoy. My favorite is still Orka and that is for several reasons.

She drives the story and is the most compelling of the book's massive cast. Orka is the most proactive point of view character. She's driven. She has the most polished chapters. I can feel for her and want her to succeed.

Now! The issues this book possesses are numerous which is why The Hunger of the Gods is getting only three stars. There are descriptions used multiple times, and sometimes in the same paragraph. To add salt to the wound the reader is reminded almost constantly of what deity fuels a character's blood. I found at least two situations where quotation marks are missing. There was something this book and the previous one both shared.

I mentioned it in the second paragraph but it requires repeating. There is only one proactive point of view character. Other characters such as Varg and Elvar were more witnesses than participants. And when a book has only on person to cheer for, on person make all the decisions, then the story has a big issue.
