Writing In 2020
Writing
In
2020
Our time as writers has been both blessed and cursed thanks to 2020. Being unable to leave the house except to perform essentials has provided more time to sharpen skills and finish projects. I personally have spent the majority of this year writing. It has allowed me to discover my biggest struggles as a writer. The year has also seen the emergence of excellent books from both debut and seasoned authors.
To the cursed part of the previous paragraph I can only say this. Some of us are single and live alone while many have mouths to feed. 2020 has put the biggest strain on those with families and thus writing likely took a back seat for weeks, or months even. I want to let you know that even one page a week this year is a brave effort. If anyone beats themselves up for not writing at all they shouldn't. We are all fighting the same fight to a degree. Many of us are wounded and tired from loss. But if you find yourself someday at the computer or with pen in hand don't hesitate. Forget about whether something goes wrong because it can all be deleted or crossed out if necessary.
I think there are some lessons we can take away from this year as writers.
1. You will hurt your writing more if you don't stay vigilant of your health and finances.
2. Ignoring the craziness of social media in a quarantined time is best. Viewing it everyday can make you feel like a cornered animal against comments and successes you wish you had now.
3. Allow yourself a break if at all possible. You aren't a machine. Remember machines can run forever but a person can't.
4. Hold on to your goals. Never let them go even if the stress of this year demands it of you.
