A Review of In The Shadow of Lightning

This book had great pacing and very sharp worldbuilding. It didn't spend too much time on certain details and was easy to understand. I say easy to understand because sometimes in fantasy writers dive way too deep into something and the reader becomes tired. I don't want anyone to get me wrong, detailed world building is fantastic. It's just a preference of mine to sprinkle it throughout the story instead of in big chunks. This author does that by sprinkling what details are needed. I found each POV character to be both compelling and worth rooting for. Especially, the breacher who suffered from hallucinations thanks to the magic of his eye.

The one character I wasn't too fond of was Thessa. She is vitally important to the story overall, but I found her to be rather boring. It wasn't until the main protagonist introduced a detail about her that I found her interesting. The detail connected both of them in a very scary way.

Overall, I would recommend this book to all who enjoy fantasy with a mix of muskets and magic.

Five stars
